This book started out amazing and continued on all throughout the story. I was expecting a book about weather to be pretty dull but it ended up being a lot of fun. From the very first page, because of the drawings as well as the way that book starts out, I got the same feeling as in a SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. Both Simon and Ruby were very well-crafted characters and I enjoyed their journey every step of the way there.
The pacing was the only thing that bothered me throughout this story. The action and adventure reads well and almost makes up for how slow the pacing can be at times, but I thought this story had wayyyy too many pages for the plot points. Things were just way too stretched out.
Other than that, characters, overall plot and premise were all really fun. I think this story will go over really well with fans of magical realism as well as Jennifer E. Smith’s YA fans. I didn’t know what to expect going into this story since this is Smith’s first MG title, but I loved this story and I hope to see more from her in the future for this genre. Past the initial judgement about the cover and the premise, this story has great development and I would definitely recommend it. 4 stars.
